How did Pangea Organics get started? Joshua Scott Onysko, owner of Pangea Organics, woke up in the mountains of Jackson, WY one day and realized that the beautiful land of
India was calling him. Ten minutes later he booked a flight to Bombay. Before setting out, Joshua returned home to visit
with his family. It was at home in Rhode Island where he found an old soap-making book and seized the
opportunity to make something with his mother before leaving. When their first batch (now Pangea’s Oatmeal
Love) was finished, he threw some in his pack and headed off to India.  Near the end of his two-year journey through Asia and the Pacific North West, the Yukon and Alaska, he found
himself playing pool in waist-high water in a bar in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with his good friend, Tom. Joshua was describing to him this obsession he had to create an institute to teach urban sustainability and responsible business development. It was Tom, a big fan of his soap even back then, who suggested Joshua start a soap company to support the institute. When Tom asked what he should name the company, Joshua replied, “Pangea!”  Two days later, he was on a flight back to the U.S., where he began making soap in his garage and selling it at festivals and concerts. Pangea Organics, in March 2005, became an 8,000 square foot soap kitchen in Boulder, Colorado, producing over 50,000 bars of soap each month.
